Team organizing principles game

The organizing principles for teams provide a good basis for discussing what the organization wants with these principles and how far along they are. We make it playful by turning it into a card game.

  • Download the team organizing principles cards or write each principle on a card.
  • You can then use these cards with the leadership team or board of directors to understand and act on the principles.
  • Place the cards in a stack and let participants take turns picking a card. The participant with the card explains the principle to the others and starts a dialogue about it. The explanation involves answering the following questions:
  • What does this principle mean, and why is it important?
  • What are the consequences if the principle is not applied?
  • What behavior aligns with this principle and what behavior does not?
  • What does this principle mean for me, and what will I do differently tomorrow?

Note, it is not an exam! The aim is to start a dialogue, so participants can help each other.

Another exercise with the team organizing principles cards is a short assessment to determine where a team currently stands.

  • Let participants indicate for each card whether they already adhere to this principle or what is needed to apply it well. The dialogue helps team members understand where they stand and what their ambition is.
  • Let the team make agreements on the next step in developing into a self-organizing team.
