Mix and match your leadership style

Situational leadership is a matter of the right mix and match. Work with the model of Hersey and Blanchard. Examine the different leadership styles in relation to the teams you lead. What is your preferred style? Do you apply different styles to different teams? Does your leadership style match what the team needs in a given situation? 

  • Ask your teams what leadership style they see you using and how well they think it meets their needs.
  • Ask for concrete examples of behavior they see in you and its effect on the team.
  • Then discuss whether they need a different leadership style and if you can experiment with it in the coming period. 

It is very valuable to look at the effect of this after a few weeks or months, both on yourself and your team.
